this past weekend was probably one of my favorites here in costa rica. i started the weekend in domincal with my friends from volunteering for one day but then i continued south 30 minutes to uvita for the rest of the weekend. my friend aly and her husband kevin have built a beautiful cabina there 1200 ft up, on a mountain overlooking the ocean. (most of you know aly sunshine as the bubbly cocktail waitress with the braids at the chart room!) i can't tell you how great it was to see familar faces after being here for 2 months....just a little taste of home, it was definately comforting! their house is so beautiful---nothing extravagent but you really couldn't ask for anything better. the house has no windows----only screens and two sets of french doors that they always keep open so being up on the mountain you are completely surrounded by nature. it's a really cool feeling---especially waking up to howling monkeys at 6am! i was only with aly and kevin for 48 hours but we managed to squeeze a lot into those 2 days.... we went for a hike in the primary forest right near their house, playa hermosa and checked out a surf competition, sunset horseback ride on the beach---which turned into riding in the downpouring rain/thunder (and saw monkeys on our ride too!), had a delicious dinner topped off with bananas flambe!, marino ballena national park (whale marine park) where we walked out on the "whale's tail" and where kevin cut down coconuts for us to drink. i'd say that's pretty impressive to fit into two days, right?! i feel like we had been talking about getting together for so long and it's hard to believe it's already come and gone. i am so happy to have been able to visit them though, to see their costa rican paradise and what they work so hard for all year long :)

i also forgot to mention that before i went to uvita, kristy and i took surf lessons in dominical....with our 55-year-old hippie surfer, bob. what i want to know is how does everyone else make surfing look so easy?! it is HARD! i'm almost positive that bob hated me because i couldn't "not think" and in his book, wasn't giving it all i got or going for it with a winning attitude but oh well....it was my first time ever on a surf board. there's no way that he should expect me to be able to stand up on the board on the first try! i didn't really enjoy his attitude and way of yelling at me for continuously wiping out in each wave but i am glad that i tried...and i did stand up! i think it was about 3 times out of....umm...maybe 30 or so?! haha i guess anything's better than nothing, right?
all star surfer haha
